Homing pigeons can be a great activity. Having birds as pets can be a very insightful and enjoyable experience for all, especially for kids, as birds are easier to keep and quite manageable. If a person wishes to keep domesticated Pigeons as household pets, then an intensive research should be done to know the methods to keep them healthy and sound. It should be a part of the definitive plan.
Danger for Humans
A person that is being open to the elements to certain proteins in the dust linked with a Pigeon's feathers over long periods of time may develop hypersensitivity, a state known as Pigeon lung. This is a type of allergic reaction and the symptoms can be quite similar to asthma. A person face to face exposure to such proteins can be fatal, before the condition becomes evident.
Amount of Space Needed
Pigeons are free flying birds. Due to this nature, they can be found everywhere. Gardens, trees, top of a building and so many other places. Pigeon cages should be placed at open outdoor places where they can view clear skies and cage size should be large then normal pet bird cages. They cannot be kept caged all the time due to their nature and characteristics; and of course their size.
They love outdoors, and the way to keep them happy and healthy is to leave them outdoors most of the time but under supervision.
Cage Maintenance and Cleaning
Use various kinds of disinfectants to remove leftover excretion residue and other stuff from the cage. Also rinse out any excretion and old feeding from it. The next time, food is kept in the nest or loft; it should be placed strategically out of the way of droppings.
Nests and Lofts
It is not really advisable to keep wild birds in cages and confine them to small spaces, but open nests are good enough for them, where they can stay safe from other animals.
Pigeons are not meant to be kept in cages; they are more commonly kept in separate houses or lofts. Aloft must be sturdy enough to keep the doves safe from the attack of predators, especially cats.
It is also recommended to build a lot of perches when making a loft for Pigeons as they can be quite territorial at times for the homing pigeons. Doves need daily flying time, so they should either be kept in a flight cage or given flight time outside of the cage on a regular basis, but if kept indoors need a large cage and still need to be let out to fly daily.
Bird entertainment, types of Toys
Place Pigeons preferably where they can see all their surroundings. Get to know them and treat them with care. Also once in a while try to hand feed your Pigeons so that you can gain their trust.
Toys are a physical stimulant and every living being needs it for their proper growth, since birds are also part of it, they can never be ruled out.
Strings and plastic toys may be the obvious choice but there is more to it than just hanging some bells in a cage or loft. Millions of toys are in the market for purchase. Many owners save money by making homemade toys for their birds. The important thing is to look for a toy that is safe, and also fits the tastes of your particular bird.
When keeping pet Pigeons, be sure them to give them your time and give them treatment with interest.
Some birds like to gnaw, therefore like wood toys or toys that are easily tattered. Some prefer bright colors and loud sounds. Anytime a new toy is introduced to a bird, it's vital that both are observed together to ensure the safety of the bird.
Also provide them with good balanced diet and proper exercise outdoors at least once in a while, and they will keep healthy while keeping people happy and entertained for a long time, homing pigeons can be a lot more fun!
