Feeding

Parrot are no different from other animals for them is also compulsory to eat and fulfill their nutritional needs in order to thrive. They eat a variety of food which is not only good but also healthy. Different people have different opinions on what parrots should eat and what they shouldn’t but it’s important to make research before the owner of the bird gets into this job.

When to give food

Food is a vital part of life not only for human beings but also for birds. Every day fresh food should be offered to the bird.  In captivity, they should be given fresh food every 3 or 4 times a week, along with a dish filled with seeds or formulated feed which should be given every day according to the requirement of the bird or observing how much it eats.

Dietary needs

Vegetables should be given to the pet bird in order to balance their diet. These vegetable should be the following:

  • Cucumber
  • Parsley
  • Sweet potatoes
  • Green, red and yellow pepper
  • Lettuce
  • Eggplant
  • Cauliflower
  • Squash
  • Snow peas
  • Sugar peas

A wide variety of fruit should be given along with the vegetables to the bird not just any of them which you consider their favorite. It is a fact that deep colored food has more nutrition then other fruits so try feed the parrot, fruits such as

  • Kiwi
  • Papaya
  • Melon
  • Orange
  • Mango
  • Berries
  • Pineapples
  • Peaches

 

Other foods that can be given to the birds are:

  • Oats
  • Wheat
  • Barley
  • Pasta
  • Brown rice that is cooked
  • Lentils
  • Beans
  • Peas
  • Cereals
  • well-cooked meat

Another thing that can be added to a bird’s diet is sprouted seeds that seem like an excelled source of nutrition. They are highly digestible and are rich in vitamins and minerals.

It is usually a good idea to give your pet extra vitamin or calcium supplements that are easily available at any pet store. These are important because they fulfill any imbalance in their diet.

Favorite food

Birds don’t have a specific type of food but if the owner wants to know the favorite food of its pet parrot then he should observe what the parrot eats without hesitating and there are no bits and pieces found in the dish. It depend on the bird what it likes but it is usually the fruits and vegetables that the birds like.

Water requirements

They love to take bath in water and fresh water should be given to them every day. Since you might notice them taking a dip in water every once a week. It should be made sure that the water is provided in a large quantity not only for bathing but also for drinking. Water being an essential part of a bird’s life keeps the diet balanced.

Food to avoid

  • Avocado: simply kill parrots especially the pit of the fruit.
  • Chocolate/coca: has theobromide which is toxic for birds.
  • High fat junk food: can lead to liver diseases.
  • Rhubarb
  • Apple seeds: cyanide in the seed cannot be ingested by birds and it kills them.
  • Persimmons
  • Table salt: is toxic since birds cannot excrete salt
  • Fruit pits: are toxic
  • Mushrooms: are deadly for birds
  • Carbonated beverages: birds have no means of getting rid of gas.
  • Grit
  • Caffeine: which is found in coffee is not well metabolized by parrots.
  • Alcohol
  • Onions: have different chemicals that damage their red blood cells.

Quantity of food

The owner of the bird should get himself up to date with the quantity of the food. When the feed is being given to them, it should be measured with a teaspoon. If the owner has a pair of birds then he should have two separate dishes.  By the end of the day the seed left in the dish should be measured. This informs him accurately how much the parrot eats.
