Parakeet Cage Types and Accessories Every Owner Should Have

Most common question which every parakeet owner has is what type of cage is good for them and what kind of accessories should be kept in a parakeet cage.
We have discussed about the cage and the accessories below.

Captivity

Parakeets found in the wild are not as big as modern Parakeets used to keep as pets. Pet Parakeets have puffy heads, full of feathers which give them embellished look. The eyes and beak can be approximately entirely obscured by feathers. Parakeets which are not different from wild Parakeets are also called “wild budgies”.

Parakeets are considered smart pets because they are very social and intelligent. They love to communicate with humans and engage themselves into activities e.g. chewing wooden objects. Specially, female Parakeets are more active.

Parakeet Cage Types and Accessories

Parakeet cage size is a big factor in keeping the bird happy. The bigger the cage better but to mention precisely, it should be atleast 22 X 22 X 24 or 24” size cage.

Cage should have perches and swings so that bird can sit and enjoy. To keep the bird busy, supply some cuttlebone to prick, in that way bird can also keep its beak well-trimmed. Lava stones, concrete perches and branches can also be included inside cage. Foraging toys should also be placed and they should be fixed properly in the cage.

Cleaning Cages

Parakeets are extremely sloppy eaters and tend to chew most of their food and flank it around. Hence it is necessary for their cages to be cleaned regularly in order to avoid a pungent smell. Cleanliness is very important to keep the bird happy and healthy.

Place a disposable plastic sheet or foil inside the Parakeet cage and change it on regular basis. You can wash the whole cage once a month or use any cage cleaners that are available in market to clean the perches. Food and water dishes should also be washed regularly.

Keeping the Bird in the Open

If you want to allow your bird to roam outside the cage and don’t fly away then you have to train it for that. First of all, never let your bird in open air just let it stay indoors. Many bird owners go for wing clipping, but somehow it’s not a suitable idea because birds love to fly around. It is better if u just let your bird out of cage when all doors are closed or confine them to some specific area of home.

Toys

Parakeets love bird toys, lengths of thick broad hemp rope act as huge gnawing toys for Parakeets. They like bird swings and bird cage ladders . Anything that is bird secure is ideal to keep these clever birds busy. Take care not to comprise toys with skinny strings or fragile parts that could damage your Parakeet.

Behavior with Bird

Parakeets are extremely affectionate, communicative and intelligent. It is necessary to give them appropriate time (at least 30 minutes daily). They are fond of being stroked and held and talked to. Because of their intelligence they also require a bundle of bird toys and distractions in their cage. Boredom and lack of activities can lead to many behavioral and health issues.
