Caiques – Diet and Nutrition
Caiques are very beautiful and playful birds that keep owners entertained and busy with their cute gestures. Proper and suitable Caique diet is the required to keep the birds happy and healthy. Poor nutrition can lead to several health issues such as bad feather quality and liver diseases. Healthy and nutritious diet is an important factor for their growth.
Water is essential for all dimensions of life. Not only is it vital for humans but for all living things including the lovely Caique birds. Fresh water must be available at all times. Water containers should be checked to be free from any dirt. Clean water will prevent the birds from falling ill while on the other hand dirty and contaminated water can lead to various diseases and make the Caiques severely ill.
Recommended Food Items
Fruits are a great source of nutrition and play a vital role in maintaining health of birds. Caiques love eating fruits, especially apples. It is not necessary to remove the seeds since they are safe to eat and the birds enjoy them.
Blue berries and Black berries are great picks to give to the Caiques. Cranberries, Grapes and Cherries will have the bird asking for more. Try experimenting with varieties to see which fruits are enjoyed the most as each bird will have its own preferences.
Tropical and citrus fruits such as oranges, strawberries, and grapefruits are great for Caiques especially during hot weather. These fruits are a rich source of Vitamin C and are very essential for their growth and health. Bananas are also very nutritious.
Always remember to throw away all fruits that contain moulds, by no means should one attempt to feed them to the Caiques. These rotten fruits can cause severe illnesses in the fragile birds. Any leftover food should be removed before it starts to rot.
Vegetables are also a great source of energy and nutrition. Yams and green kale are good for Caiques’ diet since these are enriched with vitamin A and calcium that is essential for their bones. Unlike humans, most Caiques love broccoli. Cabbages, turnips and mustard greens are also recommended and are very healthy. Peas are also liked by these birds they can be given in the pods, snap peas are great alternatives.
Corn and leafy Greens
Corn is a great for Caiques, one does not have to worry about removing the kernels from the cob since the Caiques will greatly enjoy doing that. Both fresh and frozen Corn is safe for the Caiques although fresh vegetables are always better.
Leafy green vegetables are very nutritious and full of iron. These vegetables include a huge amount of proteins that Caiques need. Few of the green food items that can be fed to the bird include; broccoli, barley grass, beet greens, chicory, turnip greens and sun flower greens.
Sprouted seeds include a large quantity of vitamins and amino acids that aid in providing the necessary energy; they are great for Caiques and also loved by them.
One of the most important elements of a Caiques diet includes fresh leaves and twigs. The minerals and elements present in these leaves, fresh branches and twigs are very essential and beneficial for the health of the beautiful bird.
Nuts are known to be the greatest gift of nature for birds, all birds are fond of them. Nuts mostly include dry fruits grown on trees. These are very nutritious and full of energy. Nuts provide a large amount of vitamins, proteins, fiber and minerals and are excellent alternatives to meat. Some great Nuts include almonds, walnuts, pine nuts, peanuts, pecans and hazelnuts.
Foods to avoid
There are certain food items that are toxic in nature and harmful for the little birds. Some plants produce some toxins as a defense from predators. These plants are safe for humans but can be toxic and dangerous for the Caiques such as Buttercup, Daffodil Holly, Mushrooms, Nettle, Oak tree and tobacco.
Do not give and Alcoholic beverages, sweets and chocolates to the Caiques, they are not safe for birds.
Milk is also dangerous since Caiques like other birds are lactose intolerant. Milk can cause stomach infections along with severe diseases in the long run. Avoid giving any food item that is cooked or fried in oil. A very high amount of vitamin A, higher than 10,000 IU can develop toxics. Cheese should also be avoided since not many Caiques like it and it can give them digestion problems.
Also remember to be slow and steady when feeding a certain diet. Always use variety of food items since a prolonged diet can be boring and at other times unsafe for the birds. For instance, Sunflower seeds on a regular basis develop abnormal colored feathers giving the Caiques an odd appearance. This is because the feather follicle fails to deposit melanin in the feathers and even contributes to certain allergies.
They say, “You are what you eat.” Likewise a Caiques life is dependent on its diet and proper care. All that is required is a little bit of extra effort and time. It will all be worth it in the long run.
