Dehydration in Dogs
Dehydrated dogs could become really sick and signs of dehydration in dogs. Dog dehydration could be due to several reasons and one should check the dehydration signs regularly.
Summer is hard for all because the level of care for body needs is high this season. One has to take good care of skin, hair and proper food intake is required. Specially, the consumption of fluids is essential otherwise there is a serious risk of dehydration. Dehydration in dogs is also very common. There are some solid reasons behind this lack of water intake in dogs that results into dehydration.
Importance of Water Intake
There is no denial of the fact that no matter how much water we drink every day, it is going to be beneficial. Water is essential because it helps the body to work in the best way possible. The body needs to throw the bad stuff outside of it and when it is watered in right quantity, it stays clean.
How much water intake is necessary for dogs?
There is no exact amount of water intake for dogs but to establish a fair understanding, it is said that a dog should drink around 1 ounce of water per pound of body weight every day. It means that if an Alaskan Shepherd with the weight of 50 pounds drinks at least 30-50 ounces of water every day, then his water intake is good enough. (30-50 ounces are from 0.8 liters to 1.4 liters approximately)
Causes of Dehydration in Dogs
The dogs that are hyperactive usually play a lot. If the dogs have some outdoor activities in summer and they are spending a lot of time under the direct sun light then this exposure would lead to heat stroke and dehydration.
Sometimes the dehydration is indirectly associated with a disease. Dogs in illness do not want to drink water. Dehydration is something that could turn into serious trouble so it is best to keep track of dog’s water intake. Some diseases make dogs drain and they seem thirsty all the time.; for example any kidney problems, parvovirus in dogs.
Dehydration Symptoms in Dogs
The check of dehydration is by stretching dog’s neck skin and looking for it to go back to normal without any delay. This check is very important and secondly the dry mouth, dry gums and no presence of saliva. Dogs under dehydration would never drool. They would seem lethargic, disoriented and shaky. Dehydrated dog might not be able to move around much and would discourage any eating as well.
Dealing with Dehydration in dogs
If a dog is not willing to drink water directly then the best idea is to provide food that is wet. Meat along with soup or broth is a perfect option in cases of dehydration. It is also important to check if the placement of dog’s water dispenser or bowl is correct or not. Dog should be encouraged to drink water when he is outdoors and the water should be placed near the play area.
If dog is experiencing a serious dehydration and needs to be taken to vet then intravenous fluids are given on emergency basis. Apart from that, dog should go through a proper physical check up to see what is causing the dehydration of such severe level.
If dog is drooling excessively then it will also cause dehydration. In such cases, check if dog’s mouth is having any infection or there is some injury etc.
It is always best to feed the dog with best food and to provide for a fresh water supply. Dogs are prone of developing bad habits very easily. It is best to make sure that dogs are drinking from a safe water source (not from toilet bowl).
Dehydration could be harmful and summer should be fun. So if one wants to enjoy the summer, then it is best to keep the body fluids level maintained.
