The average life span of this dog breed is 11 years.

Body size

They are short legged dogs but this feature does not make them a small dog. They weigh around 34 KGs for males and females are around 30 KGs. The height of an average male hound is 12-15 inches, while the females are few inches shorter.

Colors

These hounds are found in several colors and color patterns. This includes being bi-colored or tri-colored. The tan, red and black along with white are most famous. Also the blaze and white tip of their tails is a specific feature of this breed.

Coat

The coat of these hounds is short, soft and dense. It needs regular grooming because they shed a lot.

Features

This dog breed has hanging ears and lower jaw, just like Bloodhounds which help them to trace scents. They have very visible dewlap and mostly the face is very slim. The eyes are dark, not very widely open and give basset hounds a very tragic look.

Temperament of Basset Hound

Basset hound is natural hunter but it is equally good as being pet at home. These hounds have a very mischievous nature. They are always planning on doing some activity. They are happy natured, fun loving and highly extrovert dogs. The only thing that makes them tough pets is their low level of learning. They are highly stubborn and they have their own mind. They plan and execute their own thoughts. Although they can be trained, but this takes so much efforts.

These hounds are happy with other pets around and they don’t go under stress if the owners are away for longer period of time. They are considered lazy dogs but they unexpectedly do those activities that require a lot of energy.

They should be kept safe or else they will run out after some scent and could endanger themselves.

They are big food lovers and they will try their best to keep themselves placed around the food all the time.

Apart from hard training process, they are best family pets.
